Develop and drive an international strategy for energy reliability and improvement at high profile manufacturing sites
AkzoNobel’s Industrial Chemicals (IC) business unit (BU) produces and markets high purity salt, chlorine, caustic lye, hydrochloric acid, chloromethanes and monochloroacetic acid (MCA). These products are essential to daily life and used in the manufacture of vehicles, glass, performance plastics, pharmaceuticals, feed and foodstuffs, textiles and disinfectants. IC has a global presence with plants and joint ventures in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the USA, China and Japan. IC is part of the business area Specialty Chemicals.

Within this context, your mission in this role is to develop and improve the effectiveness and reliability of IC’s energy utilities (steam, water, gas, electricity, etc). You will be responsible for the improvement of energy assets performance at eight sites across Europe and China as you ensure long term business continuity and supply. Reporting to the Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) you maintain close contact with IC’s Energy Technology function.

Utility Improvement Manager

The role and its responsibilities
This role is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, but you will spend much of your time visiting the sites for which you are responsible, including those in China. You will be part of the Advanced Manufacturing department of the business unit Industrial Chemicals and will report to the director Advanced Manufacturing.

Your core task is to improve overall utility asset reliability based on a defined utility strategy. This requires you to perform reliability studies and develop long term utility asset plans for the sites of Industrial Chemicals. You also define, plan and manage selected utility projects for specific production sites.

Further, you create and implement generic utility performance dashboards. Based partly on these dashboards, you identify and drive continuous technological improvement, embodying and instilling a continuous improvement mindset.

On a regular basis you benchmark utility operations both inside and outside AkzoNobel. You then implement best practices, setting standards and properly following up the utility design and operation.

At all times you provide process technical support and expert knowledge, and you secure utility knowledge management and transfer via trainings. You also support and/or execute the negotiation with subcontractors and suppliers on contract agreement, pricing and terms together with Sourcing and managers. You then monitor and optimize supplier activities.

All of this requires you to build strong relationships with relevant personnel on site, suppliers, the ISC leadership team, and IC technology leads.
Finally, as the hierarchical and functional management of utility engineers at major production sites, you create an engaging, inspiring, capable and innovative work environment.

Candidate profile
To apply for this position you must possess all the following attributes:

  • MsC level in Engineering and 10+ years of experience;
  • Experience of leading projects of 1 MEuro+;
  • Lean Six Sigma certification preferred;
  • Supportive, understanding and customer focused facilitator;
  • Able to travel internationally on a regular basis;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent written and spoken Dutch and English.
